Gentle Rest – Decorating a bedroom oasis for life’s tender journey.
Gentle
Rest – Decorating a bedroom oasis for life’s tender journey.
This is a priority question from Delmari Greeff in Bloemfontein. She asked me to share
with you all that she is terminally ill and spends most of the time in her bed.
Delmari wants a new look for her bedroom and says that she just loves soft
pastel colors. She has read about chromotherapy and since there is nothing to
be done for her health, she wants to experience color therapy for herself. She
also asks that I include an image of Jesus, which she wants to print and hang
above her bed, and, to keep in mind that candles are a huge NO for her.
Let me
start with - how truly sorry I am to hear about your situation. I think it’s
wonderful that you’re looking into ways to create a comforting environment for
yourself. Colors and lighting can indeed have a significant impact on mood and
well-being. Since you already have a love for soft pastel colors, this will be
just perfect!
Soft, calming colors are generally recommended
for a healing environment. I’m going to share a few options but the choice will
be yours in the end. The most important thing is what personally feels best for
you. It might be helpful to try out a few different colors and types of
lighting to see what works best for your mood and comfort.
- Blue: Often associated with
calmness and serenity.
- Green: Can be restful for the eyes
and have a healing and soothing effect.
- Pink: A gentle color that can
bring about a sense of comfort.
- Violet: Associated with tranquility
and often used in meditation spaces.
The type of lighting can also play a role in
how you feel.
- Warm white light: Creates a cozy and warm
atmosphere, which can be comforting.
- Dimmable lights: Allow you to adjust the
brightness according to your needs and time of day.
- Colored LED lights: These can be set to different colors to suit your mood or the time of day. For example, a soft blue or green before bedtime may help you relax, while a brighter color like yellow can help you feel more awake if you need it during the day.
As a
chromotherapist, I would focus on using color to create a harmonious and
healing environment. Here’s an example of how I might decorate your room.
Walls:
The accent wall behind the headboard is in a soft shade of
either sky blue or light pastel green.
Light blue for serenity
and calmness. Light blue also stimulates muscles and skin cells, nerves, and
the circulatory system.
Light pastel green for that touch of nature and renewal. It aids
in the well-being of your heart, lungs, and other vital organs but it also
helps you calm down and clear your mind.
Bedding:
Crisp white linens are perfect to evoke cleanliness and
simplicity. Add in a few throw pillows in different colors like lavender,
yellow, and blue to encourage relaxation and happiness.
Window Treatments:
Sheer white curtains to let in natural light, paired
with light-blocking drapes in a soft violet or light blue for
restful sleep.
Lighting:
A good idea is to install a warm white, dimmable ceiling fixture
to adjust the brightness as needed.
Your bedside lamp can be equipped with colored LED
bulbs that can be changed according to your mood—blue for
calm, green for healing, or yellow for a
gentle energy boost.
Plants:
Adding a few indoor plants like peace
lilies or snake plants for a touch of green can improve air
quality.
Overall Atmosphere:
The goal is to create a space that feels like a personal
sanctuary, where every element contributes to a sense of peace and well-being.
The colors are chosen to soothe and uplift, while the lighting options provide
flexibility to cater to your mood and the time of day. Delmari, you must
remember that these are just suggestions, and it’s important to choose what
resonates with you and makes you feel the most comfortable.
The overall vision of the bedroom will look
like this.
The walls, painted in white with an accent wall in either sky blue or soft
green will offer a sense of freedom and calmness.
The bed is covered in white linens and a selection of throw
pillows in soothing shades of blue, lavender, and yellow will improve comfort.
The window with its sheer white curtains will allow natural
light to filter in, while soft violet or light blue drapes promise restful
sleep.
Bedside lamps have colored LED bulbs to adapt to the needs of
your soul with the calm of blue, the healing of green, or a gentle energy boost
from yellow.
Above all, a canvas painting of Jesus offers spiritual comfort,
while a large indoor plant brings a little nature and clean air into the room.
The bedroom isn’t just a simple room; it’s a nurturing retreat
for the soul, a place where every element is thoughtfully chosen to support
rest, comfort, and peace.
I hope the colors will brighten your days as much as you need
them to. I wish you all the comfort and peace your newly decorated room will bring you. Most of all – Remember that Jesus will always be there for you and that
you are never alone. Don’t hesitate to ask me for any advice. My family and I
wish you all the best.
