Breaking the black on the exterior of your home.
Breaking the black on the exterior of your home.
I received a special request
from Grady in Ireland. He was wondering if it would be possible for me to make
an exception for him. Though the blog is mainly focused on Chromotherapy and
interior decor, Grady has a color problem on the exterior of his house. He
loves the color black and wants to paint the outside of his house black, but
don't want to be labeled a 'Satanist' or 'goth.' He lives in a small village
where people like to gossip and make assumptions. Grady's question is... “Could
you suggest other colors I might add to the black, so people don’t mistake me
for a Satanist or goth? As a chromotherapist who understands the effects of
colors, what would you recommend? I can’t share a photo of my house, as I’m
worried my neighbors might recognize it.”

Grady, I understand your concern regarding the color black and the
assumptions people may make. As a chromotherapist, I suggest that you consider
adding some deep, rich colors to the black to soften its intensity and add
visual interest.
All the colors I am going to mention should be used as accent colors. For
instance, your black house with white or gray trim, window frames, or front
door can look striking and modern.
My preferred choices are deep blues or dark greens which I
believe would work well. They are still dark enough to satisfy your preference
for black, but they are less likely to be associated with goth or satanic
symbolism. Moreover, these colors have calming and balancing effects. Here are a
few other color suggestions for you to consider.
Black and blue. |
Charcoal Gray: This is a great
alternative to black and is less intense. It’s a neutral color that can blend
well with the surroundings and doesn’t carry the same cultural associations as
black. It’s also a very modern and sophisticated color.
Burgundy
or Maroon: These are dark shades of red that are rich and
warm. They can add a touch of color without being too bright or overwhelming.
In chromotherapy, red is associated with energy and passion, but these darker
shades are more subdued and can be quite elegant.
Eggplant
or Deep Purple: These colors can be a unique and stylish choice.
They’re dark like black, but offer a bit more personality and flair. Purple is
often associated with royalty and luxury in chromotherapy.
Dark Brown or Chocolate: These colors are earthy and natural, which can help your house blend in with its surroundings. They’re dark but warm and inviting. In chromotherapy, brown is often associated with stability and reliability.
White: White can be a great choice as well. It’s a classic color that can give your house a clean, crisp look. White can also reflect light, which can help to brighten up your property. In chromotherapy, white is often associated with purity, cleanliness, and simplicity.

Grady, you should keep in mind that white can show dirt and
stains more easily than darker colors, so it might require more maintenance.
When selecting colors for the exterior of your home, choose
colors that bring you joy and comfort. I wish you the best of luck with your
color decision!
Note: I have added more images below to provide you with examples of colors that would complement black.
